Tell us about yourself, what were you doing before coming to the courses at TeachMeSkills?- I graduated from BNTU, then worked there for some time as a programmer, wrote in C++. In the first year, we studied C++ a little, after that, in all programming subjects, we worked in C# (C Sharp). I would not say that there was anything interesting or useful in this. For my work, I needed databases without much immersion. My partner and I made a program for the university - the IT department of the university consisted of the two of us. In 2017, I graduated from the university, and working there was my first IT practice.
- How did you come to Android development and why did you choose Kotlin?
- I thought about mobile development for social media marketing service Android for a long time, weighed all the pros and cons in my head. At first, I taught myself Java, then, when Android switched to Kotlin, I had to master it too. However, I quickly encountered difficulties and decided to take courses to gain a deeper understanding of Android development.
- How did you search for courses? Why did you end up with us?
- I googled course programs, read reviews. I doubted the choice between TeachMeSkills and another school. I compared the programs, they are almost the same, but the other school had everything online. And I study English online and, in principle, I don’t really like this format. That’s why I chose you: i.e. the decisive factor was the possibility of studying offline.
- You already had a certain background, so you could evaluate the proposed program. What can you say about it after completing it? Did your expectations and reality match?
- I more or less understood what awaited me. I would not call the program itself difficult, perhaps because I already had some experience and knowledge. The teacher explained all the relevant things - this is very valuable: a lot of things quickly become outdated, and when you study and search on your own, you cannot always understand what needs to be learned and what has already lost its relevance. So, summing up, I can say that everything went well (smiles).
- Did your course go to Alexander Lebedev? What can you say about him as a teacher, about his methods?
- Yes, him. When Sasha talked about a topic, he always focused on important questions that are asked at interviews or that are important in work. I found this useful more than once. Once, at an interview, they asked me something that I remembered well because Sasha would say, "Okay, guys, pay attention, you definitely need to know this." In general, he always explained everything well, and if someone didn't get it, he would try to explain it a little differently so that people would understand. I would also like to point out that you could write in the Telegram chat at any time, and Sasha would always respond promptly. It's not that common for teachers to spend their personal time on students.
- Tell me, how much time did you spend studying at TeachMeSkills?
- Twice a week, three-hour classroom lessons, a total of 6 hours, plus studying at home, doing homework. Sometimes I would sit at work and study the material when I had free time. Every day in the evenings, for a couple more hours, on free weekends, until I got bored, I would also figure it out. In general, a lot of time. You have to be prepared for this, of course.
- What did you do as your thesis at the end of the course?
- Alexander said that if you find a job, you don't have to do a thesis. By that time, I had gotten a job at an IT company and was focused on work tasks, so I didn’t waste time on my diploma.
- Wow, I found a job during the courses! Usually, guys are worried during their studies, at least about putting together a cool portfolio, at least about passing the interview with dignity. And what did you show at the interview?
- My resume includes a link to my educational projects on Github, and employers looked at them. I sent out about ten resumes: three companies responded, conducted interviews, and I received an offer from two of them. The first company made an offer much earlier than the second, so I accepted it. The second company did so only 2 days before I started working. My company is mainly engaged in mobile banking, and developed the well-known “Oplati” application. Specifically, I work in a team that makes mobile banking for Paritet Bank.
